Walpole provided the inspiration, indeed, he never stopped developing his Gothic vision throughout his life, but he employed a number of architects to help him create the finished product. In so doing he set a new fashion for richly decorated houses, a place at once perfect for entertaining, and for the creative writing he enjoyed. He extended the original house westward, but in a piecemeal manner, adding a bit here and there, to create something quite striking a fantasy villa of turrets, pinnacles, and Gothick invention, a castellated palace in white stucco. But no one had ever done anything quite like Walpole. He was not the first to harken back to the medieval Gothic look William Kent had already done something similar at Esher Palace and Hampton Court. In 2007 the Department published the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Study Neighborhood Study Update: Summary, Recommendations, and Action Plan, which reviews the discussions at the neighborhood meetings, describes recommendations proposed there, and updates the status of recommendations from the 1999 study. 2007 Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Study Update The staff also sought neighborhood comment on new recommendations regarding land use and zoning, transportation, housing, economic development and open space. At these meetings Department staff reported on progress made on recommendations from the 1999 study. In 2006 the Community Development Department held two public meetings in April and June to discuss updating the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Study. The most recent Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Study was completed in 2007. Four MBTA bus routes serve Strawberry Hill, with connections to Harvard and Watertown Squares. Across Huron Avenue from the residential neighborhood is the Fresh Pond Reservation and part of the Thomas P. Mount Auburn Street and Huron Avenue are at the southern and northern edges, respectively, and serve as the main thoroughfares through the neighborhood.

There is a small commercial area along Mount Auburn Street that extends into Belmont and Watertown, both of which border the neighborhood. Strawberry Hill is mostly residential, and includes multifamily homes and a few apartment buildings. Strawberry Hill, with about 2,500 residents, is the smallest neighborhood by land area in Cambridge.
